Michael became interested in automobile repair at the age of 15 when he started his first job at Gold Flat Chevron, located on Zion St in Nevada City. At this full service gas station and repair facility, Mike began by filling tanks and washing windows. Around that same time, his grandmother gifted to him a 1971 Chevrolet El Camino, which he began to tinker on with help from his brother, Jim. As time went by and Mike was allowed to work in the shop, he began to show great interest and enthusiasm for pursuing a career in the automotive industry. His Senior year in high school meant enrollment in Nevada Union High School Auto Shop under the teaching of Leonard Menges. This gave him a chance to participate in a Ford sponsored California state troubleshooting contest. There were lot of late nights after school and work to build and modify and drive 70’s muscle cars and the like.
Mike left the gas station in 98′ and went to work at a dealership in Colfax, now named Winner Chevrolet. There he began to reach towards his potential and was given world class training from General Motors, received his ASE master technician certification, and most importantly, the irreplaceable experience necessary to be successful in the world of auto repair. He continued employment with 4-10 work weeks at Sierra Chevrolet for the next 3 years.
In early 2001, Mike went to work part time for an independent repair facility in Nevada City in addition to his job in Colfax. Wylie’s Auto Air was owned and operated by Wylie Fleeman, originally from Florida and trained USAF transport aircraft technician. Mike eventually left the dealer and went to work full time at Wylie’s. He was trained in diagnostics and specialized air conditioning service and repair, and obtained his California Smog Technician license. During his time there he worked very closely with the owner and learned about the business and customer service aspects of auto repair. It is here that he and Jeremy Taylor met, and thus began the friendship that turned into the partnership J&M.
In 2003, Mike and Jeremy had left Wylie’s and started J&M Offroad and Automotive Specialties.
